Google acquires AdMob

In light of Google's announced plan this week to buy mobile advertising provider AdMob for $750 million, it seems like a good time to take a spin back through Google’s more notable buyouts. The AdMob buyout is the third this year (though speculation is swirling that Google has also acquired SIP VoIP provider Gizmo5). First was a $106 million purchase of video compression company On2, which could help Google more efficiently deliver video. The other deal was for ReCAPTCHA, which brings Google some cool authentication technology that it can use to accelerate its massive effort to scan tens of millions of books and periodicals.

Version, Out of Control? by Mark Murphy

In late April 2009, Google released Android 1.5.In mid-September 2009, Google released Android 1.6.In late October 2009, Google released Android 2.0.That is three version releases in a span of six months. Progress is great. Progress is necessary. But there is going to be some fallout for this flood of Android versions, both with consumers and developers. On the consumer side, from what I can see, there is little effort to truly differentiate these Android versions. Yet, we have brand-new devices... 8

Dramatic license in the Bing/Google race by Kaila Colbin

Media coverage of the search industry often reminds me of the editing on The Amazing Race. Even if the first-place team is miles and hours ahead of the second-place team, the producers have to make things seem close and exciting. Otherwise, why would you watch? Come to think of it, this past U.S. election was a bit like that as well. And so it passes that Bing's every move gets covered in relation to Google. Is this the upgrade that will finally allow Microsoft to breathe Google's rarefied... 2

Facebook Aids in Open Cloud by Colt Mercer

After countless hours of lost productivity to Facebook at work, the developers made up for it by offering the Cloud computing community something to build upon. Facebook created a software framework called Thrift, now a project of the Apache Incubator, which allows cross language service deployment. Referred to by Apache as “A software stack with a code generation engine to build services that work efficiently and seamlessly between C++, Java, Python, PHP, Ruby, Erlang, Perl, Haskell, C#,...

Gartner seeing huge adoption of software-as-a-service by Jon Brodkin

Customer interest in cloud-based software applications is soaring, with software-as-a-service revenues set to reach $7.5 billion in 2009 – an increase of nearly 18% over last year, according to new research from Gartner.I don’t find the numbers too surprising – but the success of software-as-a-service is in stark contrast to many other portions of the recession-plagued IT industry.Worldwide, software-as-a-service revenue will continue growing, totaling over $14 billion in enterprise application...
